Volunteer For Committees


Research shows that when parents are involved in their children’s education, the children are more likely to:

  • be more positive in their attitude toward school
  • complete homework assignments
  • graduate and continue their education

The success of our HSA relies solely on parent volunteers.

Our purpose is to promote the welfare of MHS students in home school and community; to promote co-operation between home and school, and to provide an effective education for all students. Our success depends on your support, and there are many ways for you to volunteer your skills and talents. Please consider helping with one of the committees below.

All committees can and will take your financial donations if that’s how you can contribute (and we are grateful for it!) but we are also looking for people to be active in the community at MHS to share their talents or expertise! If you can spare donating items OR time, the HSA always forwards sign ups for opportunities.


COMMITTEES

Project Graduation This committee raises money through a highly anticipated dinner and fashion show held in the Spring. The fundraising goal is to provide an all-night alcohol and drug-free party after graduation. Project Graduation Co-Chairs: Tracey Ulrich-Matalon and Sue Bauer


Intergenerational Prom:  A prom for senior citizens held in May, just like the kids, with food, music and dancing. I-Prom Co-Chairs: Brenda Gleason and Marie-Therese Vaz


Raising Healthy Teens:  This parent group addresses issues that affect teens’ health and safety as it informs parents, students and sometimes administrators. This group launched the “Share the Keys” program at MHS to educate both parents and teens in the safety of driving after getting their license. Another aspect of RHT is the Coffee House: The Coffee House Committee – Assists in the planning, execution and chaperoning of MHS-sponsored coffee house evenings. Four coffee houses are scheduled on Fridays throughout the school year. They take place in the school cafeteria from 6:30 – 10PM. Live music is provided by student musicians and singers. Original poetry is read. Visual arts are on display and the Tricorn literary magazine is sold. Hot food is provided by the school and other snacks are donated. All students are invited to attend at no cost.
Coffee House Co-Chairs for 2014-2015 are Kelly Traudt , Nancy Verga, and Danielle Capuzzi . Volunteers are needed for setup, cleanup, chaperoning and food.


Colonial Closet:  The Colonial Closet at MHS opened in late 2015. Organized and facilitated by the school, its purpose is to support the MHS students who are struggling economically. We collect clothes and basic necessities and organize the closet. Chair: Maura Doherty.


Hospitality:  Provide and co-ordinate snacks for various school events such as staff appreciation. Beautification Beautifies the school building with flowers, greenery and decorative arrangements. Hospitality team: Stephanie Crowley, Daine Barilla-Kay, and Megan Schubiger


BookStore: Coordinates and sets up book sales for the books which are used for instruction by the English department. BookStore Co-Chairs: Maureen Rogers and Kim Mahoney

Beautification: If you have interest in helping improve and maintain the garden areas that surround the school, this is the way to permanently put your mark on the school. Chair: Margarita Armington


Lunch with the Principal: Collects donations to provide food for breakfast (seniors) and lunch (underclassmen) for randomly selected students who share a meal and ideas with the Principal. Lunch with the Principal Chair: Dawn Bertha and  Nancy Alessio


Guidance Committee: Acts as a liaison between the Guidance Department and the MHS parent community. Facilitates and assists with Guidance sponsored events and activities. The Guidance Committee also produces the Guidance Gab – information to help parents and students navigate the whole high school process for college admission. Communications: Collects and publishes articles from teachers and parents for distribution via MHS website under the Spotlight Blog; Updates the Website; Provides a weekly eBulletin informing MHS parents about events in the school, community and district. If you would like to be the recipient of the eBulletin you can subscribe on the MHS web site from the PAC page. Also puts together the School Directory; Collects parent and student information for publication. Includes Safe Homes information. Matching Gifts: Please check with your employer to see if they have a Matching Gift Program and follow their process for applying for a matching gift. The following information may be requested by your employer: The MHS-HSA is a not for profit, 501(c)3 organization. Our mission is to support families and school staff in raising healthy teens at Morristown High School. Our signature programs include Project Graduation, Alive at 25 driver safety programs, student run coffeehouses, Lunch with the Principal, our Safe Homes Pledge and student directory, Raising Healthy Teens menu of speakers and programs, and the student- run, senior citizen Intergenerational Morristown High School Home & School Association (HSA) August 2012 Prom. We also support other programs and organizations that benefit our teens, such as Teen Pride and the Morris Educational Foundation (MEF).
